Your children must take part in the discussions and the setting up of your family emergency plan in order buy in to it. Teach your children: How to attract attention and get help if they are not with you. How to raise the alarm if there’s an accident, and whatinformation to give. How to contact other family members if they need to. How to recognize the smell of gas and how to tell an adult if they smell it first. What to do if a fire starts. Why they should never touch electric sockets and plugs, or electric wires that have fallen to the ground.
Make sure that your children know their (your) phone number. Make emergency cards for your children to carry all the time. They should contain the following information: First name and surname. Address Home phone number, Parents’ work phone numbers,Phone numbers of one or two close relatives or friends, to be contacted if there is no reply from the parents.
Explain to your children and all your family members that if there’s a disaster, the school head teacher will be responsible for looking after them until the alarm is lifted. The children must understand that you won’t come to collect them straight away. Make sure that your children know where to find you if there’s a disaster and none of you can get home. Practise with your children so that they’re used to reacting in the right way in an accident, or if you should suddenly became ill or injured.
