How to prepare Print

You can prepare yourself psychologically to face an emergency by imagining what might happen and thinking about what you could do in that situation, not only for yourself and your family, but also for others.

You can identify the risks around you in your daily life (in your home, at your work place and in your local area) and think about how able you would be to respond if something went wrong. How can you prevent accidents from happening? How can you act for the best if an accident happens? Taking these steps will help you to react more effectively when you are faced with an emergency situation.

The stress caused by emergencies may have a positive impact on you and give you a felling of strength, and the feeling that you can deal with the situation and act in the right way. But stress can also have a negative impact. It can paralyse you and give rise to unexpected physical or mental reactions like confusion, the inability to make decisions, and so on. Preparing yourself mentally and practically for a disaster is the best way of reducing its impact on yourself and your family.
