A reference in the field of the humanitarian relief, the French Red Cross carries on a constant fight to relieve the men suffering. Relying on 50.000 volunteers and 16.000 employees, the association implements all the means at its disposal to meet the missions which it set. The French Red Cross is a non profit-making and state approved since 1945 association, recognized public utility since 1945. In 2003, the French Red Cross, associated to the Austrian, British, Spanish and Finnish Red Cross National societies was selected to carry a project, heading: "Best practices and life-support kits for self-protection European Union citizens in households, in the case of a daily or disastrous emergency". This group produced for the European Commission (consequently the Member States of the Union and their citizens) : A final report containing the recommendations aiming at reinforcing the capacities of self-protection of the citizens as well as the possibilities to encourage them to prevent the accidents and, at first, take responsibility of themselves during major disasters. A kit called “catakit” and its instruction guide allowing to everybody, in case of disaster, to have at hand, instantaneously, the tools, a first aid kit and food. An evolutionary web site (this site) which has authority to become an elementary reference as regards “self-protection”. Today, the French Red Cross, with the assistance of the European Red Cross National Societies, associations working on the issue “defense and civil safety” and the experts, works for: developing the acuiteness of the citizens as regards the risks, reinforcing their capacity of self-protection, providing them tools to guide them before, during and after an accident.
